Pile of Books is a personal shelf for books, comics and manga. This page explains what data the app stores, why, and your choices under Brazil's General Data Protection Law (LGPD, Law 13,709/2018). Data controller: Nei Alves. Contact us: neigirao@gmail.com.
What we store
- Account: your email and, if you sign in with Google, your Google profile name and photo. If you sign in with Apple, the email Apple provides (which may be a relay address if you hide your email) and your name, if you allow it.
- Your shelf: books and comics, covers, reading status, ratings, reviews, dates, progress, reading sessions, quotes, lists, goals and preferences.
- Reading clubs: clubs you create or join, and what you post in them.
- Public profile (optional): your display name, photo and chosen /u/your-name URL.
Why we use it
Only to operate the app for you: show your shelf, calculate stats, find covers and book details, and notify you when a book or comic you searched for appears in catalogs. We do not sell your data or show ads. The legal basis is providing the service you requested when creating an account and, for photo identification in the mobile app, consent for each use. On the website, identification starts when you select a photo, as explained below.
Who processes the data
- Supabase: Google or Apple sign-in and the database where your shelf is stored.
- Google and Apple: if you choose to sign in with one of these accounts, sign-in goes through that provider.
- Google Gemini: in the mobile app, a cover photo is sent only after you review the local preview and tap "Send for identification with Google Gemini", with consent for each photo. On the website, selecting a photo starts identification and may send it to Google Gemini without a separate consent screen. The photo is used to identify the book or comic. If you do not want to send it, use manual search or barcode scanning. In the mobile app, you can also choose to read photo text on your device without sending the image. Recognized text may be looked up in public catalogs.
- Public catalogs (BrasilAPI, Open Library, Google Books, MangaDex, Jikan and Comic Vine): receive the title, author or ISBN you search for to find covers and book details. They don't receive your email or shelf.
- Wikidata: receives only the author's name to find their country for the country chart in Stats. It doesn't receive your email or shelf.
- Google Analytics 4: app usage metrics, such as visits, sign-ups, books added and feature use (theme, filters, reminders). Google may use cookies or device identifiers to measure these interactions. We don't send your shelf or reviews as analytics events.
- App analytics disables Google advertising signals and ad personalization. We do not use Hotjar, AdSense or session recording.
- Sentry: technical error reports so we can fix problems (error message, code excerpt, browser and device). No screen recording, no email and no IP address.
- Firebase Crashlytics (Google), iPhone app only: a technical report when the app closes unexpectedly (device model, system and app version, a code excerpt and an installation identifier). Never your email or your shelf.
- Lovable: website hosting and technical error logs to fix problems.
What becomes public
Nothing, unless you turn on your public stats page in Settings. It shows only stats (totals, genres, authors, publishers and pages by month), never your full shelf, reviews or notes. Club posts are visible to that club's members.
Cookies and browser storage
We use browser local storage to keep you signed in and remember preferences. We don't use advertising cookies. Google Analytics may use cookies or identifiers to measure visits and interactions.
Your browser caches static app files to load faster. Shelf data and signed-in pages aren't stored in the offline cache. You need an internet connection to open your shelf.
Reading reminders: times and days are saved only on your device. In the mobile app, your operating system schedules notifications; none of this is sent to our servers.
Your rights
- Export: in Settings > Data, download a complete shelf copy as JSON or CSV at any time.
- Correct: edit anything you've added in the app.
- Delete: in Settings > Delete account, confirm with the displayed word to permanently delete your login and personal data. Export your shelf first. Emptying your shelf does not delete your account, login or shared club content. Transfer ownership of shared clubs, lists or challenges first. If you need help, contact neigirao@gmail.com.
Deletion is confirmed only after personal data and authentication records are removed. If a step fails, retry in the same flow or contact support. To remove Sign in with Apple permission too, open your Apple Account settings, select Pile and stop using that sign-in. This does not delete your Apple Account.
